16th Khachaturian International Online Competition Violin June 6-15, 2020

The 16th Khachaturian International Competition (hereinafter Competition) is to be held in Yerevan from June 6 to 15, 2020.

Conditions of the Competition

The Competition is open for violinists, regardless of citizenship and nationality, aged at least 16 and not older than 32 years on the date of the opening ceremony of the Competition (June 6, 2020). Violinists, who are former First prize winners of the Competition, are not eligible to participate.

The Khachaturian International Violin Competition consists of a Primary audition stage (selection by submitted video materials) and 3 rounds: 1st round, 2nd round (semifinal), 3rd round (final).

No more than 24 participants will be selected to participate in the 1st round of the Competition, following the Primary video auditions.
No more than 12 participants will be selected to participate in the 2nd round.
No more than 6 participants will be selected to participate in the 3rd round.
In exceptional cases, a different number of participants may pass to the following rounds of the Competition upon the decision of the Chairperson of the Jury.
Candidates who are not admitted to participate in the next round of the competition may submit inquiries (through the Organizational committee of the Competition) to a Jury member selected by the Organizational committee.
All works (with the exception of sonatas) must be performed from memory in all rounds of the Competition. The performance program submitted by the participant is not subject to change throughout the Competition. All participants are free to set the order of the pieces they perform.
The Jury reserves the right to withhold a prize altogether or share it among candidates. The Jury`s decision is final and is not subject to appeal.
The 1st , 2nd and 3rd rounds of the Competition are held online. Broadcast is available at the official website of the Competition.
Successful candidates of the Primary audition get access to the Competition application and are required to upload video recordings of their performances for all 3 rounds, in accordance with the Competition timeline.
A simple User`s guide is provided for the online application. The participant is required to report to the organizers of the Competition any technical issues arising during the use of the application within the shortest possible time, providing a description of the problem in the chatbox in the Competition website.
The candidate must be accompanied by a pianist during the perfomances in the 1st and 2nd rounds. A performance dress code is instituted for the performance of the candidate violinist and the accompanying pianist.
The 3rd (Final) round performances will be accompanied by the recordings of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra (the rules of use are available in the User`s Guide of the application provided to the participants passed the 1st round).
The pitch of the orchestra is 442 Hz during the 3rd round.
The order of appearance of the participants will be determined by a computerized random draw and maintained till the end of the Competition.
The broadcasting rights of the Competition and its rounds, entire volume of audio and video recordings as well as the right to their further use belong to the Competition and are made available to the participants per their request. Following the announcement of the results of the Competition, the audio and video recordings of the participants performances are kept uploaded till June 16, 2020 inclusive, and then removed from the web with the exception of the performances of the participants having received special prizes.

Selection of Candidates

All candidates must submit to the Competition the link to the video recordings of their performances (with a minimum duration of 15 minutes). The application form should include the exact title list of the compositions to be submitted for audition, with an indication of the date and duration of the video recordings.
Videos should be taken by one fixed camera, with a single shot and without interruption/editing throughought the duration of one piece. Only videos made after June 6, 2017 are accepted. The compositions presented during Pre-selection can be performed during the next three rounds of the Competition as well.
Following the Pre–selection, Candidates will be informed of passing to the 1st round of the Competition via e-mail. The results of Pre-selection will be announced at the website of the Competition on June 1, 2020.

Participation fee

No participation fee is involved in the Competition.

How to Apply

Application for participation and relevant documents should be submitted to the following E-mail address:
[email protected] indicating Name, Surname and “Application for participation in the Khachaturian international Competition” in the subject line of the mail.
The deadline of the applications is May 25, 2020.

The completed application form should be attached with documents listed below:

  • Photocopy of the passport;
  • Autobiography in English (Armenian and Russian as well, if available));
  • One high resolution artistic photo (at a minimal size of 2Mb) for use in the Competition promotional materials;
  • Copy of the participation fee payment order. No application will be considered without payment confirmation document.
  • Articles about the candidate, published within the past five years, if available.

The Competition has the right to reject an application which does not meet the regulations of the Competition. Additional information may be required from the participant, if necessary.
By applying to participate in the Competition, the candidates give their consent to participate in all rounds of the Competition, in the manner chosen by the Jury. During the admission of applications, the Competition collects personal information regarding the participants for certain procedural purposes of the Competition. Personal data is stored in a reliable database. Only the following details about the participants are subject to publishing- name; surname; date of birth, place of birth, nationality, biography, photos, personal website and social media profiles. No unpublishable inforamtion about the participant may be transferred to third parties. The participants may view their personal details and make changes in writing.
By submitting the application, the candidates confirm their acceptance of all conditions of the Competition.

As of the moment of publication all the rules of participation are correct. However, the organizing committee of the Competition reserves the right of certain adjustments not later than 1 month before the launch of the Competition.

1st and 2nd Rounds

Technical Requirements of the Recording

Preferable Smartphones*

  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, (IOS version 13+)
  • Samsung Galaxy S10+ Plus (Android - version 5+)
  • Google Pixel 3a XL (Android - version 5+)
  • Razer Phone 2 (Android - version 5+)
  • LG V50 ThinQ (Android - version 5+)

*If you are using an external microphone, other smartphone models are also fine.

The “Khachaturian International Competition” application is available via Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

The following 4 steps should be considered before making the recording:

1. A performance dress code is instituted for the performance of the candidate violinist and the accompanying pianist.

2. Make sure your Smartphone has:

  • Enough battery charge to avoid the phone turning off during the recording process. An uninterrupted experience may be secured by plugging in the phone for the whole duration of the recording;
  • Enough storage space;
  • The Airplane Mode is turned on.

3. Test the acoustic of the space before you start the recording.

To test the sound quality press the record button. You can record a short composition and play it back to check for any echo or other noises.

4. Check the best position of the smartphone and the brightness of the room.

It is necessary to fix the smartphone in a landscape position. Please make sure that there is enough light in the room for best visibility of your performance. It is highly preferable to have a mono colour background.

*The performer (and the pianist, if present) should be visible in the video. It is important to make sure that:

  • the whole length of the arm with the bow fits in the frame;
  • the phone is located at a distance of 1-1,5 m from you while performing;
  • you are in the frontal position on the camera;
  • the sonata scores are placed in a way that they do not block the image of you and the pianist in the video.

Each composition should be recorded as a separate video.

The access for this function will be made available by June 3, 2020.

3rd Round

The performance of Aram Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto in the 3rd round will be accompanied by an orchestral recording. You will be given access to different versions of the accompaniment to adjust them to your preferable tempos, with consideration of tempo changes and other artistic necessities of your interpretation recital.

It’s preferable that the participants use Ipads or Tablets to be able to follow the conductor on the screen. Wired or wireless earphones/headphones are required to listen to the orchestra accompaniment while performing.
